I was listening to Rob Bell of Mars Hill on my way to work the other day. I have a forty minute commute so it’s a good time to squeeze in a sermon. Bell is starting a series on Paul and Philippians and he focused on how Paul uses the phrase Grace and Peace. This statement is in the first chapter as a greeting in every book he writes. Bell provides a definition for both words and how we can use them to live a life in Christ. I encourage you to download the sermon from early January and have a listen. It’s worth it.

The definition of grace is what grabbed me. Bell explains that the word grace that Paul uses is from the Greek word that means to rejoice. He also provides the following definitions: “Grace is a favor done without expectation of return.” The philosopher Spiro Zodiakes offers the following description, “Grace is the absolutely free expression of the Love of God finding it’s only motive in the bounty and benevolence of God.”

WOW – God freely expresses his love for us each day. Not for gain, not to move us to in a particular direction, but only to express his bounty and benevolence. He offers us the experience of His free expression of the love without expectation. Every day.

The definition offered by Zodiakes illustrates the limitations of the English language when it comes to expressing the blessings of God in our lives. I seek holiness because I am grateful for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and God’s willingness to provide his Grace to me, His absolute, free expression of love. How can I not give him my all and seek him with all my hear.

Grace and Peace to You!
